History of Landscape Design

The "landscape architecture" term was first used in the United States in the late XIX century. But the history of landscape design has begun long time before.

Probably, the first landscape designer was a woman who was hanging plants around the cave for drying, or a man, who rolled to the cave stones to make fire on them. The official history of landscape design has begun about 10 thousand years ago in the valleys of Mesopotamia, where the first anthropogenic (man-made) landscapes has been made.

Anthropogenic landscapes quickly became settlements and cultural centers of this period. Among the ancient centers of agriculture there are Mextico, Peru, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Central Asia, India and China. The development of agriculture in these regions has made them the greatest cultural centers, so contemporary art of landscape design is their cultural heritage.

The ancient masters of the landscape, except for aesthetic purposes, thought about practical side of the issue. We know that all modern irrigation systems were invented in ancient times, and for several hundred years were just upgraded in accordance with the trends of progress. For the ancient architects it was a matter of survival, therefore, the landscape design is based on the "three pillars" of mankind - science, technology and art. Most of gardens compositions is sophisticated technical and design constructions. Seemingly simple alpine garden consists of stones laid in a heap, and plants germinated on it. But if to carry out a test and put the stones in the pile, placing plants on them, month or two later they will fall apart, and in a year snow and rain will wash away the soil.
